Vastu Shastra is a primitive doctrine which describes of precepts born out of regular views on how the laws of nature affect human lives. The designs are based on directional alignments. The subject is especially used to apply in Hindu architecture, though recently it has been using in various spheres in different countries.  Experts in Vastu Shastra call it is a construction science.

In Sanskrit, the word “Vastu” means “House” with a correlate with plot of land. The Vrddhi, Vastu, takes the meaning of “The site of a house, ground, building, place, habitation, homestead, house” etc.

There are many divisions of Vastu Shastra. Many of them are used for certain mathematical calculations. We have mentioned below some of the predominant theories of Vastu Sastra.

In accordance with Vastu Sastra, the earth incorporates with five basic elements, called “The Pancha Maha Bhoota”. Out of the 9 planets only the earth has life because of the existence and balance of five basic elements.

These are as follows:

Space (Ether/Akasha)
The Space gives covers to all the above elements. It is examined the primary conductor of all energies in the universe, such as physical energies – sound and light, social energies – psychological and emotional and cognitive energies – intellect and introspection.

Earth (Bhumi/Land/Soil)
Our earth is the third planet in the solar system, is a big magnet with North and South poles as centers of attractions. Earth’s magnetic field and gravitational force has considerable effects on everything (living and non-living things).

Water (Jal)
This part is constituted by rain, river and sea and is in the form of liquid, solid and gas, in solid form – ice and in gas form – steam and cloud. It forms an essential part of every animal and plant kingdom. Our blood mostly consists of water.

Air (Vayu)
This is a life supporting element and is a powerful life source. Human physical comfort values are directly and sensitively dependent on correct humidity, air flow, temperature of air, air pressure, air composition and its content.

Fire (Agni)
It constitutes heat and light which describe day, night, different seasons, passion, energy and strength.

Vastu Sastra merged with all the above elements of the universe and tries to balance these all with the persons and the material world. The subject takes advantages of the blessing by the five basic elements of nature to build a pleasurable living and with the working environment thereby make smoother the spiritual well-being and enhance the way of our wealth, health, prosperity, peace and happiness of life.

Vastu Sastra is one of the most primitive science of architecture that goes back to the Vedic ages, it is collected with some of the important rules and regulations, set down by sages of those times, that are related with architecture, builder, owner etc and was expected to religiously follow to avoid coming under negative impacts in our lives.

Although, Vastu Sastra is quite similar to Feng Shui in that it also tries to harmonize the flow of energy (Also called life-force, and Prana in Sanskrit, similar to Chi in Chinese) through the house, it differs in the details, such as the exact directions in which various objects, rooms, materials etc are to be placed.

Is Vastu Shastra a Science?

The science of “Vastu Sastra” has just started acquiring its immense popularity during the past 2 to 3 decades. The distinctive characteristics of Vastu Shastra a primitive science is that it is mainly based and developed on the natural laws. Such as Ether (Space), Earth (Land), Jal (Water), Vayu (Air) and Agni (Fire).

These five elements are most essential for all animal kingdoms in the earth. Therefore, establishing harmony with our nature to intensify peace and harmony has been the main aim of Vastushastra. This Sastra (Subject) is mainly based on 8 directions and 5 above mentioned elements. Thus, any Vastu which is developed on the basis of these 5 principles of nature is bound to present with wealth, success, affluence, peace and harmony to the person using this Vastu.  Therefore, it considered a Science which is specially used for the well-being of human lives.
